Chancellor Justin Schwartz invites nominations for the 2026 Chancellor’s Employee of the Year Award. This annual award is presented to CU �Ǹ�Թ� staff in recognition of and appreciation for exceptional job performance and distinguished contributions to the campus community. Award criteria include job performance, leadership, service and interpersonal skills.

The award includes a prize of $5,000 (after tax) and a commemorative gift. The awards will be presented at a ceremony hosted by the chancellor in January.

Eligibility

All eligible CU �Ǹ�Թ� classified and university staff may be nominated for this award.
Nominees must have been employed by CU �Ǹ�Թ� for at least three years by the nomination deadline and must not have received any corrective and/or disciplinary actions within the last five years.
Employees may only receive this award once during their campus career.
University officers (i.e, deans, associate vice chancellors and above) are not eligible for this award, and nominations will not be considered.

Nomination information

Nominations may be submitted by any member of the campus community (staff, faculty or student) who has firsthand knowledge about the nominee. Nominations should be submitted using the online nomination form.

Each nominee should have:

One primary nomination submission.
Two additional supporting submissions by individuals other than the primary nominator.
At least one of the submissions must be from the nominee’s direct supervisor.

Nominations should address and provide specific examples of the following criteria:

Outstanding job performance

Demonstrates consistently outstanding performance in all areas of their job
Incorporates ethical practices and behaviors in all areas of their job

Exemplifies inspired leadership

Leads with integrity and in a way that contributes constructively to the department or campus’ mission
Identifies and addresses challenges that arise in an honest, thoughtful, and ethical manner
Works to advance diversity, equity and inclusion practices

Extraordinary service

Supports the unit, department, college, campus or surrounding community in unique ways that go beyond the employee’s job responsibilities

Exceptional interpersonal skills

Supports co-workers
Improves department/division/unit morale
Provides outstanding customer service
Consistently exhibits a positive attitude

Submission process

To submit a nomination or supporting submission, please complete the electronic nomination form. Nominations must be received by 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30.

No more than three total submissions will be accepted for each nominee.
Submissions will not be accepted past the nomination deadline.
Awardees are expected to be notified in December.

Each September, units across campus partner to deliver Compliance Week—a coordinated series of messages about the policies and resources that keep our community safe, ethical and connected. Over the coming days, you’ll receive eMemos on key topics such as student privacy, voter registration, alcohol and other drugs, and the Annual Security Report.

The Office of Compliance, Ethics and Policy (OCEP) provides leadership across the university to strengthen accountability, manage risks proactively and support compliance through training, communication and reporting.

Campus Policy Review Project

OCEP is leading a multi-year Campus Policy Review Project to ensure university policies remain clear, consistent and aligned with current operations and regulatory requirements. Through a structured review process running through 2028, the project will help strengthen governance, improve usability and establish a regular review cycle for policies across campus. Recent updates to policies in the divisions of Public Safety and Academic Affairs were shared in CU �Ǹ�Թ� Today on Sept.14, and the campus will continue to receive periodic updates on policies as they are implemented.

Join the Compliance and Ethics Educational Series

OCEP will host the next session in its Compliance and Ethics Educational Series on Oct. 15, from 11 a.m. to noon on Zoom, featuring Gabrielle Wright, senior executive advisor for the Division of Public Safety. This session will explore the Jeanne Clery Campus Safety Act and CU �Ǹ�Թ�’s approach to emergency response and prevention.

From climate comedy with students to a conversation featuring Bill Nye (The Science Guy), CU �Ǹ�Թ� faculty and sustainability leaders will bring research, expertise and solutions from Colorado to one of the world’s largest climate gatherings this September.

Climate Week NYC, held Sept. 20–27 alongside the United Nations General Assembly, brings more than 100,000 people to New York City for more than 1,000 events focused on climate and sustainability. This year, CU �Ǹ�Թ� faculty and sustainability leaders will speak, host and collaborate across more than a dozen events focused on topics including climate communication, energy, forests, information integrity and the future of the electric grid.

For CU �Ǹ�Թ�, the week is an opportunity to connect the university’s research, education and experience with people making decisions about policy, investment, technology and communities, while building partnerships that can help move knowledge into action.

“CU �Ǹ�Թ�’s sustainability work has positive impacts that reach beyond Colorado from field research in the the Arctic to water systems in Africa to rainforests in South America and more,” said Andrew Mayock, vice chancellor for sustainability. “Engaging the international community through Climate Week gives us an opportunity to learn from others, strengthen partnerships and bring CU �Ǹ�Թ� expertise into conversations that can lead to further action in Colorado and beyond.”

Finding new ways to talk about climate

Climate communication will be one of the most visible parts of CU �Ǹ�Թ�’s presence in New York.

On Sept. 22, CU �Ǹ�Թ�’s SPIKE Center for Sustainability Education and the University of Pennsylvania’s Center for Science, Sustainability and the Media will host Breaking the Ice Before it Melts: Effective Climate Communication. The event will feature Bill Nye, “StarTalk” co-host Chuck Nice and National Geographic Explorer Asher Jay in a conversation moderated by climate scientist Michael Mann about how climate communication can help move people from information to action.

Earlier in the week, the SPIKE Center, Penn and Hip Hop Caucus will bring students together for a Youth Climate Comedy Workshop & Showcase Competition at Fordham University. Students will work with professional comedians and climate communicators to turn climate issues into original comedy before taking the stage for a public showcase.

“Climate change touches every part of our lives, but the ways we communicate about it don’t always connect with people,” said Max Boykoff, professor of environmental studies and faculty executive director of the SPIKE Center. “Humor gives us another way in. By bringing students, scientists, communicators and comedians together, we can experiment with new ways to make climate conversations more relatable while giving students the opportunity to develop their own voices.”

Bringing CU �Ǹ�Թ� expertise into global conversations

Those events are part of a broader CU �Ǹ�Թ� presence throughout the week. Faculty and sustainability leaders will contribute to conversations about tropical forests, building electrification, artificial intelligence and the electric grid, climate solutions and data visualization.

Boykoff will also participate in a high-level United Nations dialogue on information integrity, bringing his climate communication expertise to a global conversation about misinformation, public trust and access to reliable information.

Together, these events reflect CU �Ǹ�Թ�’s broader approach to sustainability: connecting education and research, with action and partnerships beyond campus. Climate Week provides an opportunity to share what CU �Ǹ�Թ� is learning in Colorado while bringing new ideas and relationships back to that work.

The Colorado chapter of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA)—the most prestigious recognition program honoring the state's best public relations campaigns, tactics and professionals—honored CU �Ǹ�Թ�’s Strategic Relations and Communications (SRC) department at a Denver ceremony on Thursday, Aug. 27.

The department received five Gold Pick Awards and two Silver Pick Awards for exceptional work in the communications field.

Team awards

The Value of Research Campaign, involving the work of the entire SRC department, received a Gold Pick Award in the integrated communications category.
SRC’s 2026 State of the Campus Campaign, led by Kellen Wilson, received a Gold Pick Award in the category of integrated communications.
The CU �Ǹ�Թ� Wi-Fi Improvement Project, led by Greg Stauffer, received a Silver Pick Award in the category of internal communications.

Individual awards

AI ghosts are coming: Is that comforting or creepy?—by Lisa Marshall—received a Gold Pick Award in the category of feature story.
Common sugar substitute shown to impair brain cells, boost stroke risk—by Lisa Marshall—received a Gold Pick Award in the category of news release.
Human emissions drove the megadrought in the Western U.S.—by Yvaine Ye—received a Gold Pick Award in the category of feature story.

Best in-house team

From campaigns to systems: CU �Ǹ�Թ�’s integrated reputation transformation, involving the work of the entire SRC department, received a Silver Pick Award, reflecting the strength of SRC as a whole and serving as a testament to the impact the department’s evolution into an integrated marketing and communication approach will continue to have on building CU �Ǹ�Թ�’s reputation every day.

Critical support for these winning pieces of work came from SRC leadership, including Erin Frazier, Jon Leslie, Jennifer Schufer and Candace Smith. Also, mightily involved in the success of SRC’s winning campaigns and stories were the behind-the-scenes teams that develop and support the department’s strategies, operations and channels: Marketing and Content Strategy; Strategic Communications; Constituent Experience and Technologies; Work Management and Brand Intelligence; Budget and Financial Administration; and the Strategic Events Team.

The city of �Ǹ�Թ� has announced that it plans to begin construction on its South �Ǹ�Թ� Creek Flood Mitigation project at CU �Ǹ�Թ� South in about six weeks.

The 2021 annexation of CU �Ǹ�Թ� South capped a yearslong collaboration between CU �Ǹ�Թ�, the city and the community to bring flood protection for 2,300 downstream residents, housing for CU �Ǹ�Թ� students, faculty and staff, and 119 acres of new permanently protected open space to the site.

Completion of the flood protection project will pave the way for CU �Ǹ�Թ� development of housing and other amenities, along with open space restoration.

During flood protection construction

The city of �Ǹ�Թ� will manage the site and lead communication and outreach efforts.
Construction is expected to take three to five years.
The site will remain closed during construction to prioritize community and worker safety and to minimize impacts on open space.
The city’s South �Ǹ�Թ� Creek Flood Mitigation project website will be the best source of information.

CU �Ǹ�Թ� site planning

The flood protection project must be completed before CU �Ǹ�Թ� can begin developing housing on the site. CU �Ǹ�Թ� site planning for the developable portion of the site has not yet begun. When it does, engaging students, faculty, staff and the community will be a priority.

Completion of the flood protection project will pave the way for CU �Ǹ�Թ� development of housing and other amenities, along with open space restoration.
