  • Imperial Emotions: Cultural Responses to Myths of Empire in Fin-de-Siècle Spain. Liverpool: Liverpool UP, 2013 (Open Access edition available).ÌýThe bookÌýreconsiders debates about historical memory from theÌýperspective of the theory of emotions. Its main claim is that the demise of theÌýSpanish empire in 1898 spurred a number ofÌýcontradictory emotional responses,Ìýranging from mourning and melancholia to indignation, pride, and shame. ItÌýshows how intellectuals sought to reimagine a post-Empire Spain byÌýdrawing onÌýmyth and employing a predominantly emotional register, a contention thatÌýdeparts from current scholarly depictions of the fin-de-siècle crisis in SpainÌýthat largely leave theÌýrole of both emotions and imperial myths in that crisisÌýunexplored.Ìý
