Check your leave balances and make plans to use any hours of vacation time over the maximum allowable accrual time before the July 1 leave sweep deadline. As always, vacation leave requests are subject to the approval of your supervisor; don’t wait to put in your leave requests. If you have any questions regarding leave, please contact your supervisor or Tanya Patzer.

Juneteenth, traditionally celebrated on June 19, marks the date in 1865 when the Union Army arrived in Texas—the last state in the Confederacy with institutional slavery—to proclaim freedom for enslaved Black and African Americans more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth became an official state holiday in Colorado last year.

On June 19 this year, CU ǸԹ will remain open in alignment with the 2023 academic calendar and will be open for classes and other university business. However, campus leaders encourage students, staff and faculty to reflect on the history and significance of the holiday and avoid scheduling other major campus events on Juneteenth.

Campus managers are encouraging CU ǸԹ employees to use the floating Juneteenth holiday for 2023 before it expires on June 30. Leave-eligible employees receive eight hours of leave (prorated for part-time staff) in honor of Juneteenth. This leave needs to be used on or before June 30, 2023.

• For staff using FAMIS: request in advance, as you do for a vacation day, by entering the leave type “POD” in the FAMIS self-service portal (leave requests).

• For staff using MyLeave: request in advance, as you do for a vacation day, by entering the earnings code “Personal Observance Day” in MyLeave.

Starting next year, CU ǸԹ will observe Juneteenth as a fixed holiday rather than a floating holiday and along with other public colleges, schools and offices will close in accordance with state guidelines.

If you have questions, please contact your supervisor or Tanya Patzer.

Jessica deserves this award for her hard work and dedication to the functionality of our Outdoor Services Department. Jessica's tasks have included a variety of things as of late. Since the beginning of the new year, Jessica has taken on more of my workload relating to Campus Events, since I have additional duties as well from a recently vacated position. Jessica has also been an integral part of the AssetWorks team for Outdoor Services. She has also taken on more of a role in reporting graffiti on campus and getting the appropriate Service Requests entered.Jessica has been a huge help in getting us the documents in order for our vacant positions within our department, including editing and tracking and submissions to HR. I'm sure I'm missing a few additional duties that she's doing, all while fulfilling her normal job duties. Jessica performs her job duties without hesitation and always ahead of schedule. She goes above and beyond to support our supervisors as well as our front-line staff. From ordering safety PPE, tools andsupplies to answering questions, delegating service requests, supplying reports, sending out and tracking trainings, helping with student and FTE new hires, to Tree Campus USA support, Jessica has always been a phone call or email away to support us. Jessica keeps our department running and keeps us on target for deadlines. Jessica is an outstanding member of our team and deserves this award!

The site superintendent at theOfelia Miramontes and Leonard Baca Education Building(previously known as Fleming)was very appreciative of Noah’s extra effort to get a project through the occupancy milestone:“I have done this for more than a year or two and last week marked the first time I ever saw an inspector on a project at 4:30 in the morning to facilitate an inspection to then ensure a timely TCO… kudos! We have come to appreciate the team atmosphere you and the other CU inspectors have created; it lends itself to a cohesive process and it is appreciated.” Thank you to the entire team of inspectors for going above and beyond to keep our campus projects moving forward. Your efforts are greatly appreciated!

Deven Chavez - Electric shop (nominated by Vaughn Ochs)

I would like to recognize Deven for his work with the safety committee. Deven started with the university in September of 2022 and volunteered to serve on the safety committee a few months after starting. He has been attending regular meetings and reporting on safety hazards around campus. Deven is very aware of his surroundings and works safely. He shares with the shop the safety committees’ recommendations and ideas. He has been a great addition to the Electric shop and Safety committee.

June is National Safety Month

June is National Safety Month and is a time for us to focus on how to keep ourselves and our work environment safe, so that we can avoid unintentional injuries. We recognize some of the work we do is inherently risky. We need your help to continually improve our safety program on campus:

• Report hazards promptly and suggest solutions to issues that you see.

• Talk about safety to others, and be good role models for one another.

We will be sending out several messages throughout the month to remind you to keep a safety mindset and an overall commitment to safety.

Wildfire and Smoke Awareness

It’s fire season in Colorado, and with that comes the possibility of smoke. Wildfire smoke contains pollutants that can be harmful. It is rare that smoke conditions would ever warrant broad operational changes for the university. However, EH&S and Emergency Management will work with campus leadership if such conditions ever do exist to determine an appropriate course of action, with any changes communicated out broadly to the campus. Please check in with your supervisor if you have questions or concerns about what precautions should be taken when doing work outdoors. Colorado air quality advisories and current air quality updates are available at the .

FM Safety Committee

The FM safety committee meets the third Tuesday of every month to discuss general safety concerns, review safety reports, on-the-job injuries and recommend training needs and resources. If you are interested in attending a meeting or bringing an issue or idea that is safety related, please reach out to your area representative on the or contact our Safety Specialist Don Fitzpatrick.
