The “Shifting Phenomenon:� Impact Among Black Women and Other Women of Color
Shifting is an important fundamental skill that black womanÌýand women of colorÌýhave adoptedÌýtoÌýsurvive professional settings. ShiftingÌýis double sided. Although it is alteringÌýthe authenticÌýself and expectations to accommodate a socially acceptableÌýidentity,Ìýit is alsoÌýan effective technique to process and navigate experiences.ÌýHelpingÌýblack women and otherÌýwomen of colorÌýmanage the shifting phenomenon will increase the awareness that shifting can be used as a toolÌýto acknowledge theirÌýauthentic self,Ìýand theÌýcomplexity ofÌýintersecting identities,ÌýultimatelyÌýproducing mental wellness.ÌýÌý

Participants will be able to:Ìý
- UnderstandÌýthe foundation of Shifting and how it contributes to the academic/professional experience of women of color
- Explore the impact Shifting has on the mental health and wellbeing of women of colorÌý
- Implement effective strategies to help manage the Shifting phenomenonÌý
