EH&S conducts routine safety inspections of research laboratories to ensure compliance with university policies and regulatory requirements.Ìý

Prior to inspections, a notification email is sent to all labs within the building outlining the months during which inspections will take place. Following the inspection, a detailed report is provided to the Principal Investigator (PI) and Group Compliance Liaison (GCL), highlighting any findings or required corrective actions. Labs are given 30 days to address and resolve identified issues.

Inspection Escalation

If a Lab group does not resolve inspection findings within 30 days of the receipt of the inspection report and has not contacted EH&S for assistance with resolution, the inspector notifies the Department Chair (or Institute Director), noting that the inspection findings have not been resolved in a timely manner. If needed, EH&S will work with the Lab group (or Department) to resolve complex compliance issues.

If the inspection findings have not been resolved (or a plan for resolution has not been made) within 30 days after EH&S has notified the Department Chair (or Institute Director), EH&S escalates the compliance issue(s) to the Dean of the school/college and/or the Research and Innovation Office (RIO).

Imminent Safety Hazards and Serious Compliance Issues

EH&S staff notify the Assistant Vice Chancellor, EH&S when imminent safety hazards or serious regulatory compliance issues are identified during an inspection, observed in the course of other duties, or reported to EH&S. Examples of imminent safety hazards include but are not limited to chemicals or gases stored or used in a manner that may create an unacceptable exposure or fire safety hazard; unauthorized use of regulated biological or radioactive materials; illicit discharges of chemicals or other research-generated materials to the sanitary sewer; and material storage that creates an imminent falling hazard or blocks emergency egress. In these cases, EH&S coordinates with the PI or manager, Department leadership (e.g., Department chair or dean) and/or other CU °Ç¸ç³Ô¹Ï groups (e.g., building managers/proctors, Facilities Management, leadership from other departments) to correct serious safety or regulatory compliance issues expeditiously.
