Students Nominate Emerson's Use of Media Archaeology Lab for Teaching with Tech Award

Does new media correlate with technological progress?Ìý That's whatÌýstudents investigate in Assistant Professor of English Lori Emerson's Introduction to Media Studies course.Ìý To understand the extent to whichÌýtechnological media has progressed over the past century, Emerson asks herÌýstudents toÌýhandle old computers, typewriters, recordÌýplayers, etc. at theÌýÌýÌýon GrandviewÌýAvenue in °Ç¸ç³Ô¹Ï.Ìý There, students,Ìý"Take things apart, and seeÌýwhat's going on underneath the hood ... IÌýreallyÌýbelieveÌýthat you can't understand how media work without using it.Ìý YouÌýcan't understand without hands on access," says Emerson.Ìý She created the Media Archaeology Lab in 2009 andÌýcontinues to direct it.Ìý The lab collects older word processors, sound equipment, and recording devices.Ìý Emerson cites that one suchÌýrecent addition to the lab is a 1920s era EdisonÌýphonograph.Ìý "ItÌýworks with a crank," she says.

InÌýIntroduction to Media Studies, EmersonÌýteaches students aboutÌýtheÌýhistory of computing andÌýabout the progression of media from past to present.ÌýÌýSheÌýsays that she helps students "...Ìýthink about how things could workÌýotherwise and could be otherwise--howÌýto reimagineÌýpossibilitiesÌýfor computing."ÌýÌýEmerson encouraged her students to bring their own media devices into the lab during their monthly visits there to compare the artifacts in the labÌý"... upÌýagainst new media."ÌýÌýÌýEmerson says that spending time with older machines allows students to consider "... how long their computers and old cell phones could last ... SomeÌýold machines can do things better than our machines today."ÌýÌýShe says thatÌýshe tries to challenge students toÌýreconsider the value of older technologies and:

...Ìýthink critically about old and new media of all kinds ... IÌýgetÌý[students]Ìýto see that every new technology that comes out isn'tÌýnecessarilyÌýbetter.Ìý OneÌýof the ways that I do that is bringing them into the MediaÌýArchaeologyÌýLab.

Students in the Spring 2015 semesterÌýof the class enjoyed their time in the lab so much that theyÌýnominatedÌýEmerson forÌýanÌýASSETTÌýExcellence in Teaching with Technology Award.Ìý One student wroteÌýthat EmersonÌý“... [centered] the class around forms of technology–new and old, visiting the multi-media archaeology lab, and using technology to teach.â€

Emerson's students wroteÌýblog posts to reflect on their time in the Media Archaeology Lab.Ìý Then, theyÌýwrote research papers and collaborated for finalÌýgroup creative projects.Ìý Groups' projects respondedÌýto topics thatÌýthey talked about in class.Ìý One group created aÌýsoundÌýart project about the soundsÌýthat old machines made in the lab.Ìý Another group created a typewriter art exhibit.
